Greening Sacred Spaces Team

Position: Program Director, Greening Sacred Spaces Halton-Peel

Reporting to: Executive Director, Halton Environmental Network (HEN)

Hours: 35 hours/week including some evenings and weekends

Duration: Contract from November 2018 to May 2020 (19 months) with an expectation of extension.

Location: Queen Elizabeth Park Community & Cultural Centre, 2302 Bridge Road, Oakville, ON


The Program Director:

  • coordinates the planning and delivery of environmental programming, focusing on capacity building and community action via Education, Outreach, Energy Benchmarking, and Community Gardens
  • acts as the public face and principle contact in Halton and Peel for Greening Sacred Spaces Halton-Peel (GSS HP), a program of Halton Environmental Network and a chapter of Faith & the Common Good, which exists to assist faith communities in taking concrete actions to create a more sustainable and eco-friendly place of worship
  • implements the actions and achieve the deliverables remaining in the three-year grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, with support from local GSS Advisors and staff at Halton Environmental Network and Faith & the Common Good
  • efficiently manages, seeks to improve, and continues to evaluate and grow existing programming, partnerships and processes to ensure maximum benefit to partners and the environment as outlined in the mission and goals of the program and active grant


PROGRAM: Plan and implement the Greening Sacred Spaces Halton–Peel Program

  • Ensure completion of all grant deliverables and overall financial management of the program
  • Promote, organize and manage the four main streams of programming within GSS HP, including Education, Outreach, Energy Benchmarking and Community Garden programming streams
  • Engage members of local faith communities throughout Halton and Peel regions to establish relationships and better understand motivations to take positive action for the environment
  • Tailoring programming to suit the community needs and motivations, which can include expanding and diversifying topics for workshops, speaking engagements and events
  • Actively promote GSS HP programming in community with outreach, networking and building on existing partner base
  • Act as a guest speaker or topic expert for community environmental events and capacity building workshops – this includes facilitating existing and potentially new environmental workshops for small to large groups of all ages and faiths
  • Plan, promote and launch annual Green Awards event to recognize partner achievements
  • Finalize program evaluation plan and tools (Mentimeter, Google Forms, etc), and track statistics and project deliverables for grant reports
  • Improve and create new dynamic promotional materials, project resources and campaigns
  • Recruit, engage and train volunteers and interns to support the program
  • Supervisory role for Gardening Coordinator and Canada Summer Jobs Students
  • Ensure proper documentation of all program activity, tracking data, event guides, meetings and other important information
  • Seek out funds to help support and maintain the project beyond the end of the grant


  • Frequent updates shared and planning meetings scheduled with HEN Executive Director
  • Updates to HEN, HEN Board and FCG staff during monthly meetings, where needed, and scheduled progress reports to Foundation
  • Maintain a vibrant internet presence, including website and social media channels
  • Produce monthly or every other month newsletters to share project updates and other news
  • Ensure website is updated – especially News, Resources and Calendar pages
  • Increase awareness of the project and grow the contact list by registering a HEN/GSS information booth at public and environmental events, participating in Interfaith Council meetings, helping to organise Interfaith Peace Camps and big interfaith community events like the One Burlington Festival, attending Interfaith or faith-based events in community and getting out in community as much as possible to network.
  • Respond to all inquiries in a timely manner and arrange for face-to-face or telephone meetings with partners shortly after initial contact or interest expressed
  • Constant follow-up, reminders and check-ins with current partner communities to ensure continued and well-organised programming


  • Attend and participate in monthly conference calls or Energy Benchmarking Team calls
  • Share updates and resources with FCG and other local coordinators
  • Contribute chapter data for FCG’s annual report


  • Bachelor’s degree in environment, communications, social services, or related area
  • Project management experience required
  • Supervisor experience
  • Self-motivated and self-directed
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience working directly with diverse cultural, socio-economic and vulnerable groups
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office, email, mail chimp, promotional networking platforms, social media – WordPress an asset
  • Dependable and very well-organized, ability to multi-task and prioritize effectively
  • Attentive to detail
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Very comfortable with public speaking
  • Passion and interest in assisting and inspiring positive environmental change at a grassroots level
